“It’s a wonder you didn’t have nightmares your whole life after what she did to you,” he murmured against her wooly hat. “And the dream itself—it’s the same now as it was then?”

“Mm-hmm. Except now, near the end, when my mother throws herself against the glass, it’s not her I see. I used to just see a blurry spot where her face would be. But now, it’s not blurry. It’s Alice Clark. It’s her face from the memorial poster. The second-year student whose memory was wiped.”

“I remember,” Dash muttered. “Bloody hell.” He released her shoulders and shoved the bandage into his book bag as they resumed walking, continuing in silence for a block or more before he questioned her again.

“Has Judy contacted you?”

Bree sighed and shoved her hands even deeper into her coat pockets. “No. I haven’t heard from her since the day before we were implanted. She left town unexpectedly on business.”

“You haven’t heard anything at all?”

Bree stared resolutely ahead. “No.”

“Do you think she might know more than she has shared with you, Bree? Aren’t you curious? Your subconscious is practically screaming at you every night.”

She shrugged. “She doesn’t know anything.”
